Relating breakup and incomplete fusion of weakly bound nuclei through a classical trajectory model with stochastic breakup.

چکیده
A classical dynamical model that treats breakup stochastically is presented for low energy reactions of weakly bound nuclei. The three-dimensional model allows a consistent calculation of breakup, incomplete, and complete fusion cross sections. The model is assessed by comparing the breakup observables with continuum discretized coupled-channel quantum mechanical predictions, which are found to be in reasonable agreement. Through the model, it is demonstrated that the breakup probability of the projectile as a function of its distance from the target is of primary importance for understanding complete and incomplete fusion at energies near the Coulomb barrier.

Reaction dynamics for fusion of weakly-bound nuclei
We discuss several open problems of fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we solve a one dimensional three-body Hamiltonian with the coupled-channels formalism. We show that the continuum-continuum couplings substantially reduce the total fusion probability at energies above the barrier compared with the no-breakup case, although the fusion probability remains enhan...
متن کاملReduced suppression of complete fusion due to breakup after incorporating lifetime effects
Above barrier measurements of complete fusion of light, weakly bound nuclei such as Be in reactions with heavy targets such as Bi indicate a suppression of complete fusion relative to single barrier penetration model calculations [1]. This suppression may be interpreted as the result of the breakup of Be prior to the distance of closest approach, producing a smaller probability of both fragment...
متن کاملFusion suppression and sub-barrier breakup of weakly bound nuclei.
The mechanism for the large suppression of complete fusion in the 9Be+208Pb reaction has been investigated through measurement of sub-barrier breakup of 9Be. Excluding breakup through the 8Be ground state, whose lifetime is too long, a prompt breakup component remains, having sufficient probability to explain the observed suppression of complete fusion. This appears to be associated with intera...
متن کاملTransfer and breakup of light weakly-bound nuclei
We investigate the origin of the effects observed in the fusion cross section of light weakly bound nuclei, through a review of the most recent experimental and theoretical works. In particular we focus on the well-documented fusion suppression at energies just above the potential barrier. We show that, besides the couplings to the breakup process, effects due to the couplings to transfer need ...
متن کاملUnderstanding the interplay between sub–barrier breakup of Li and above-barrier suppression of complete fusion
With the discovery of halo nuclei, and recent intensive development of radioactive ion beams (RIBs) around the world, there is renewed interest in studying interaction of weakly-bound light nuclei as a basis for understanding interactions of halo nuclei and RIBs. Using a novel experimental approach [1], reactions of the weakly–bound nuclei Be and Li with heavy targets consistently showed suppre...
